New-found opportunity to live life to the fullest
The experience that Mdm Saudah Marwan went through when she was diagnosed with breast cancer was a lesson learnt for this courageous woman.
"While I was working previously, my health was not that good and I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. That dark episode became a memory for me forever. But it was also a lesson for me as I learnt how important it is to embrace life and live actively. And so, after retirement, I participated in activities that enabled me to be happier and to keep myself physically and mentally healthy," the retired teacher said.
Keeping mentally and physically well
Now at the age of 64, the mother of three is taking advantage of her free time after retirement to explore a variety of activities and interests. Since then, she has signed up for various National Silver Academy (NSA) courses such as the Mindfulness Foundation Course by Brahm Centre, Happiness Act, The Magic and Power of Looking Good by Society of WINGS, and even art classes like Modern Calligraphy by Family Central.
Mdm Saudah and her sister are avid learners. Besides the NSA short courses, they also participated in the Intergenerational Learning Programme – Fun with Herbs, enjoying the interaction and bonding with the students at Chongfu Primary School. As a retired teacher, Mdm Saudah knew how lively school students could be and true enough, she received warm hospitality from her student buddy throughout the session. Mdm Saudah was able to connect with her student buddy instantly as both shared similar interests. They learnt new knowledge on herbs and gardening together, and she felt that it was very fruitful and fulfilling.
"We learn from each other. The students always want to show what they have learnt to senior participants like me," she remarked. As a result, much knowledge was gained, especially in the field of gardening, social media and health diets. Mdm Saudah also went on to take up another NSA course – Urban Permaculture by Society of WINGS in April 2019 as she enjoyed gardening and growing her own herbs.
Spreading knowledge to the younger generation
Besides participating in exercise like yoga, pilates, fast walking, low impact aerobics and swimming, Ms Saudah also spends time teaching primary school children to read. “I want to do my part for the community as there are still many children who don’t know how to read.”
"There are many courses available under the NSA. There are definitely activities that attract senior citizens like me. After taking some of these courses, I learned a lot of knowledge that can now be applied daily at home and abroad." she said.
**Special thanks to Mdm Saudah who accepted our interview, we wish her all the very best in her lifelong learning journey.
