Understanding the self through art
While art can serve many different purposes and functions, Fiona Tham uses art in an interesting manner - to understand herself better.
Fiona, 51, managed to learn how by attending the ‘Exploring Art Therapy’, a short course conducted by LaSalle College of the Arts under the National Silver Academy (NSA). The course introduces different artistic media and teaches students how to interpret emotions and motives behind artworks.
Building Trust in people
After attending the course, Fiona realised that her art was actually a reflection of her feelings. “I am not good at memorising human faces as I did not have a very close relationship with my parents. My emotions have been reflected in the paintings unintentionally. The lecturer was able to tell from the shapes, lines and colours that I use. She will then encourage me to use different artistic mediums to cope with my weaknesses and fears.”
In another instance, her lecturer was able to point out that Fiona rarely drew humans, but preferred drawing animals and insects and encouraged her to build trust in people.
Contributing back to society
Fiona is a firm believer of ‘giving is better than receiving’, often supporting charity by donating her paintings. She said that her first half of life was tough but there were many people who helped her along the way. She would like to contribute back to society now and ensure that the second half of her life is meaningful and fulfilling.
Life is a journey of learning
Lifelong learning can benefit us in many different ways, such as staying connected to society, fulfilling one’s aspirations and dreams and spending time meaningfully by exploring new interests. For Fiona, she managed to learn more about herself.
Gaining insights into her own self-reflections and coping with her insecurities were Fiona’s greatest takeaways from this course. The course enabled her to learn more about herself, bringing about tremendous positive change.
This course has not only strengthened her determination, but also reaffirmed her motivation to be a counsellor one day. She is thankful that this course at Lasalle has brought her a step closer to her goal.
**Special thanks to Fiona Tham who accepted our interview, we wish her all the very best in her future endeavours and lifelong learning journey.
